    Our language

Val del Biois is a ladin area and its language is a Ladin language, a  minor language recognized and protected by law.

The local dialects enrich the passion for tradition and history of the Dolomites and it is important to talk and teach them to the children as it is something which brings back to a community.

The history of Ladin people: forgotten and cancelled

On the Dolomites there are about 50.000 Ladin people. The valleys where this language is spoken are: Val Badia, Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Val di Fodom, Comelico, Cadore, Agordino e Val di Zoldo.

The Ladin language was born when the Roman Empire extended onto the Alps in 15 b.C.  Here Reti people acquired the Latin language which developed in  into a Ladin language ( retoromancio)

    Some History

Ladin is a real language and not only an Italian dialect. There is a great debate on the identity of this language. Someone considers it as a poor barbarous dialect which must be cleaned, other consider it as a pure indipendent language.

Ladin language has many rules which come from the Romance or German tongues and are not typical of the Italian Language, and this is the reason why it can be considered as an indipendent language.

During Fascism Ladin was defined as a “Grey stain” that should have been taken off. So an assimilation process of the Ladin people was started.
